The National Joint Powers Alliance in Staples recently recognized 48 area high school students as Region 5 Rising Stars at the 25th annual Student Recognition Banquet.

Those honored included Pequot Lakes High School students Allie Dischinger and Mikayla Horgen, and Pine River-Backus High School students Jennifer Holm and Angela Pederson.

Nearly 400 people attended the banquet. NJPA's goal when creating this awards banquet in 1992 was to help member schools recognize deserving students who might not otherwise receive any recognition for their hard work and dedicated service to their community, to their school and to their fellow students.

Each school district within Region 5 is invited to select one or two students in grades 11-12 to be recognized.

The Region 5 Rising Star Award was presented to 48 area high school students, along with scholarship presentations by Central Lakes College and Minnesota State. Over $20,000 was awarded to these students in scholarships and door prizes.
