A 17-year-old boy suffered injury Saturday, May 9, after he was accidentally shot by a handgun by a family member.
The Crow Wing County Sheriff’s Office was called at 12:05 p.m. to the shooting at a residence on the 11000 block of Bonnie Road, in the First Assessment District just south of Merrifield. Deputies responded to the scene and a 17-year-old boy was found to be shot in the abdomen from an accidental discharge by a family member handling the firearm. The sheriff’s office reported the family member was showing the gun to the teen when it accidentally went off.
The boy was transported to Essentia Health-St. Joseph’s Medical Center in Brainerd and then transported to St. Cloud Hospital for multiple surgeries.
The sheriff’s office is preparing paperwork for the Crow Wing County Attorney’s Office to review for possible criminal charges.
