Alcohol is believed to be a factor in an all-terrain vehicle crash Sunday, May 26, near the Spider Lake Recreational area in rural Backus, seriously injuring two young women, authorities report.

The Cass County Sheriff's Office received a report at 6:09 p.m. from a Lake Shore Police officer who had contact with a vehicle whose driver was transporting two women who were involved in an ATV crash in the Foothills State Forest, near the Spider Lake Recreational area.

It was learned the driver, Tiffany Johnson, 19, Backus, was operating a 2013 Can Am Renegade ATV when it flipped over on her and her passenger, Brooke Mendenwaldt, 20, Backus. Johnson was transported via North Memorial Air Care to a St. Cloud area hospital and Mendenwaldt was transported to Essentia Health-St. Joseph's Medical Center in Brainerd.

The sheriff's office reported alcohol is believed to be a factor in the crash and the investigation continues. Assisting the sheriff's office was the Lake Shore Police Department, North Memorial Ambulance and North Memorial Air Care.
