No travel advised because of icy roads; schools closed
The Crow Wing County Sheriff's Office advises no travel this morning, Monday, Jan. 7, because of ice coating the roads.
Area schools were scheduled to start two hours late before closing for the entire day. Crosslake Community School and the Pequot Lakes, Pine River-Backus, Pillager, Staples-Motley and Crosby-Ironton school districts canceled the school day. Central Lakes College also closed Monday.
The sheriff's department reported that rain overnight left roads ice-covered and slippery. The Baxter Police Department reported Minnesota Department of Transportation crews were salting roads but travel and walking conditions were very poor.
"We encourage our community to plan for extra travel time as slow speeds are a must. Don't forget to increase your following distance and be careful walking," Baxter Sgt. Dave Timm wrote on Facebook.
The National Weather Service in Duluth reports a chance of snow showers and freezing drizzle, mainly before 9 a.m. It will be cloudy, then gradually becoming mostly sunny, with a high near 36 degrees.
