PR-B Area Relay for Life teams sought - Team captain meeting is Monday

Does a night hanging out with your friends, family and neighbors while raising money in the fight against cancer sound like fun to you? Then the Pine River-Backus Area Relay for Life is the perfect fundraising event for you.

The American Cancer Society's Relay For Life will be Friday, June 16, at the Pine River-Backus High School track and field.

Do you have a co-worker who is going through treatment now? Do you have a family member that had cancer and is now in remission? Do you want to make a difference in the lives of the people you love who may hear the words, "You have cancer?" The Relay For Life gives you the opportunity to do that.

Talk it over with your family, friends or co-workers about getting a team together. Each team member needs to raise $100 and can easily do so by selling luminary bags. The bags can be decorated by the donor and honor or be in memory of a survivor. A festive atmosphere is created at the relay with music, food or an activity at each campsite.

The gates are open to the public at 5 p.m. with the opening ceremony at 7 p.m. The luminary lighting will occur at dusk. The relay previously went overnight, but it now ends at midnight.

In recent years there has been a "pie" throwing event after the opening ceremony featuring local "contestants." For a $5 donation, the participant can throw or smash (gently) a plate of whipped cream (pie) in a contestant's face. Contestants who have committed to the event this year are: Cass County Sheriff Tom Burch; Superintendent Dave Endicott and principals Andrew Forbort and Rick Aulie, from the PR-B School District; and Superintendent Chris Lindholm and Principal Mike O'Neill, from the Pequot Lakes School District.

This is the 14th annual relay event in Pine River where teams have come from Crosslake, Pequot Lakes, Longville, Pine River and Backus. This relay event has consistently collected over $20,000 in donations each year.

The next captain meeting will be at 6:15 p.m. Monday, April 24, at The Warehouse in Pine River. Contact Tina Grewe at 218-568-6084 with any questions about the relay or if you would like to have a team and are unable to attend the meeting.
