Brianna Adkins was crowned Miss Pine River 2017 at the 38th annual Miss Pine River Scholarship Pageant on Saturday, April 1, in the Pine River-Backus High School gym.

Tara Huston took the First Princess crown, Avery Cunningham won Second Princess, and Sydney Davidson was chosen Miss Congeniality.

Adkins, a junior at PR-B and the daughter of Kyle and Lori Adkins, will receive a $1,000 scholarship for winning the Miss Pine River title. Huston, a junior, will receive a $500 scholarship; Cunningham, a senior, a $400 scholarship; and Davidson, a junior, a $100 scholarship.

Other contestants in the "Fairy Tale Evening" pageant were juniors Veronica Hulke, Emma Mills and Briana Siltman. Escorts were students Joe Davidson and Nate Brasel.

Contestants participated in a personal interview with judges earlier in the day Saturday, and then competed in business casual wear, talent and evening gown at the pageant. Talents included singing, playing instruments, dancing and giving speeches.

The Miss Pine River royalty will represent Pine River by attending chamber events and area parades and pageants, helping at the weekly Pine River duck races in summer, and promoting the chamber and community throughout the year.

Relinquishing crowns were 2016 royalty: Miss Pine River and Miss Congeniality Rachel Burns and Second Princess Sam Mauer. First Princess Shelby Adkins did not attend.

Pageant chair is Barb Klocke, and Jay Cline was emcee.

I follow city and school board officials as they make important decisions for residents and students and decide how to spend taxpayer dollars. I look for feature story ideas among those I meet and enjoy, more than anything, helping individuals tell their stories and show what makes them unique.
