Following a weekend of three virtual concerts, the 12th annual Lakes Area Music Festival moves into its second week of performances, featuring four main events, all free to the public.
This season is broadcasting worldwide from Tornstrom Auditorium in Brainerd, and viewers around the globe have the first chance to see these performances via Facebook Live.
At 7:30 p.m. Friday, Aug. 7, the Lakes Area Music Festival will present City of Angels, a concert of classics with Hollywood connections. Years before coming to Los Angeles as a refugee from the Nazis, Erich Korngold wrote a string quintet packed with all of the glitz and glam of his later work in film. Set alongside two later giants of movie music - Philip Glass and Ennio Morricone - this concert again features the “blazing intellect (and) impeccable technical skills” (Theater Jones) of pianist Kenny Broberg.
At 7:30 p.m. Saturday, Aug. 8, Grammy award-winning bass-baritone Dashon Burton once again joins the Lakes Area Music Festival in Paradox of Praise. After a mixed set of German lieder and songs by the great American composers Florence Price and Margaret Bonds, the program features Mendelssohn’s Lutheran-flavored second trio for piano and strings, featuring Queen Elizabeth Competition prizewinner, Henry Kramer, piano.
At 2 p.m. Sunday, Aug. 9, in one of the most eclectic and jaunty events of the season, the Lakes Area Music Festival presents Suites Françaises. Dance-inspired music by everyone from J.S. Bach to Hungarian modernist György Ligeti, this display of instrumental and textural variety is sure to delight.

From being the youngest composer ever to win the Pulitzer Prize to collaborations with artists like Kanye West, Caroline Shaw has emerged as one of the essential artistic voices of our time. At 7:30 p.m. Wednesday, Aug. 12, the Lakes Area Music Festival presents Requiem, featuring the first full recording of Shaw’s "By and By" with bass-baritone John Taylor Ward. Valerie Coleman’s "Requiem Milonga" and Mozart’s Serenade for Winds in E-flat round out this healing meditation on those we’ve lost.
