Auditions for “Romeo and Juliet,” presented by Greater Lakes Area Performing Arts, will be held at 6:30 p.m. Monday, May 31, at Brainerd High School and Tuesday, June 1, at Pequot Lakes High School.
The cast consists of 20 characters and is for ages 14 and up. Some characters may be doubled, if needed. Rehearsals will be from 6:30-9 p.m. Monday-Thursday beginning June 9 at Pequot Lakes High School. Not every actor will be needed every day. A detailed rehearsal schedule will be shared June 9.
Performances will be Tuesday-Thursday, Aug. 3-5, and Saturday-Monday, Aug. 7-9, at Pequot Lakes High School and is directed by Karla Johnson. The setting for this production will be kept during the Elizabethean time period.
Those who attend auditions will be asked to do two readings from “Romeo and Juliet” - a monologue from a character in the play and a dialogue with two characters in the play. Those who would like the audition readings ahead of time or have questions may email karla.johnson@isd181.org, and will be sent the audition passages. Those who are unable to attend auditions may email Johnson to arrange a time that works.

- Romeo (actor could be ages 14-21) is clever, moody and romantic, never does anything halfway, including falling in love.
- Juliet (actress could be ages 14-21) is witty and smarter than her age. She is not afraid to go after what she wants.
- Mercutio (actor age 16 or older and a gender-neutral role) is Romeo’s loyal friend, loves to make bawdy jokes, and is the comedic relief in this play.
- Benvolio (actor age 16 or older and a gender-neutral role) is Romeo’s cousin and friend, a peacekeeper and helper.
- Friar Laurence (actor age 40 or older) is a mentor to Romeo, idealistic and eager to do something good for the community. He believes Romeo and Juliet’s love can bring peace.
- Nurse (actress age 40 or older) is Juliet’s nursemaid, her nanny, best friend, protector, and is another comedic relief in the play.
- Tybalt (actor age 16 or older and a gender-neutral role) is Juliet’s cousin who hates Romeo’s family, the Montagues. Prideful and has a temper. Tybalt is the villain in this play.
- Capulet (actor age 40 or older) is Juliet’s father who thinks he knows what is best for her; has a temper.
- Lady Capulet (actress age 40 or older) is Juliet’s mother, a little out of her depth when it comes to connecting with her daughter.
- Prince (actor age 21 or older and a gender-neutral role) is in charge of the community in Verona; tries to keep the peace in a community with families at war, who just will not listen.
- Paris (actor age 16 years or older) is an upper class count who is in love with Juliet. Kind and forthright.
