WALKER — The Cass County Sheriff’s Office was called Saturday, May 1, to a water rescue involving three juvenile kayakers on Leech Lake in Walker.

The 911 call came in at 4:58 p.m. and kayakers were on Leech Lake, west of Minnesota Island and were caught in the wind and taking on water, with one juvenile being in the water. Winds were gusting up to 23 mph, according to the weather data at the Walker Municipal Airport. Deputies responded and located the three female kayakers, who were unable to paddle their partially submerged kayaks that had taken on water. One of the girls was in the water for several minutes, the sheriff’s office reported.

All three were wearing life jackets and were rescued from the water and taken to shore where they were treated on scene by North Memorial Health Ambulance and released to an adult.

While the air temperature was 82 degrees, the water temperature was 45 degrees and the safe outcome of this incident was the use of life jackets by all three juveniles, stated Cass County Sheriff Tom Burch in the news release.
