The Pequot Lakes Patriots won six of the seven brackets to win the Brainerd Moose Tournament with 26 points Saturday, Sept. 7, at Brainerd High School.

Megan Muller, Courtney Boller and Carly Chaney won their singles brackets, each going 4-0, for the Patriots. Alexa Fyle and Elli Saxerud claimed the No. 1 doubles title. Morgan Lueck, Quinn Trottier and Riley Fogarty rotated to go 4-0 at No. 3 doubles.

“We were hoping we might win this tournament, but we were determined not to be disappointed if we didn't quite make it. It is a tough, competitive tournament,” coach Monica Sergent said. “It is only our second time to ever place first. So we decided to hope to win it, try our very best, give 100% effort, and then be satisfied with whatever happened. To come home with six first-place finishes and one second at seven positions was outstanding. The girls were so excited. I was very proud of all of them. It was definitely a season highlight.”

Pequot’s Madeline Pluimer claimed the No. 3 singles championship with a 3-1 record. Her loss came in pool play where a tiebreaker system ended her advancing to the championship. The same tiebreaker affected Brainerd’s Savannah Smith who played for fifth-place and also finished 3-1.

Patriots sweep Glencoe

Boller remained undefeated on the season and the Patriots quickly dispatched the Glencoe-Silver Lakes Panthers 7-0 in a non-conference match Friday, Sept. 6.

The Patriots lost only two games in the match as they defeated all their opponents in straight sets. They improved to 15-1 for the season.

"Our singles players did a great job keeping their opponents deep and moving them around on the baseline. The doubles girls were very strategic with their shot placement. These are things we have been focusing on in practice, so it was rewarding for the girls to execute them in match play."
