Pequot Lakes’ Calia Chaney finished third to earn All-State honors at the Class 2A State Cross-Country Championships Saturday, Nov. 6, at St. Olaf College in Northfield.

Chaney ran in 18:44.99 for third, about 45 seconds behind the leader.

"Calia executed the game plan perfectly," coach Jeff Brever said. "The race strategy was not to start too fast, catch the pack, draft from the 1.5-2 mile marker and finish strong … I believe it was Calia's race mentality and race strategy that helped her persevere over other top runners. When you design a race strategy, believe in it, visualize it, then everything usually falls into place because you have done the preparation and are prepared to act on every situation."

The Pequot Lakes boys finished 13th as a team led by Eli Hall’s 36th-place finish in 17:07.51.

Jesse Clausen was the second Pequot Lakes runner in 17:45.84. Dawson Ackerman raced in 18:22.79 for the Patriots and Charlie Schiessl was behind him in 18:28.47.

"The boys' team ran a great race at the state meet," Brever said. "When going up against the top teams in state, we knew we still needed to run our races. Throughout the race, we moved up individually and as a team. I am proud of how we performed and were not overwhelmed with the situation. We are lucky to have great leadership on the team."

The fifth runner for Pequot Lakes was Shane Crowley in 18:49.95. Steve Maschhoff in 19:38.19 and Braeden Davis in 19:40.14 rounded out the Patriots at state.
