Fire crews from Ideal Township, Crosslake and Pequot Lakes responded to a fire Friday, Nov. 28, at Beacon Shores Resort on Whitefish Lake in Crosslake.

Two attached cabins were fully engulfed when the crews responded just before 11 a.m. The two cabins, Cabin 1 and Cabin 11, had no occupants at the time of the fire.

Karen and Dan Scholz have owned the resort for 14 years.

"It was a total loss. There is absolutely nothing left of cabin 1 and there is one wall standing in cabin 11," Karen said.

These cabins were two of four that are rented throughout the winter and were built in the 1940s, around the time the resort first opened. Karen said there were no bookings in either cabin until after the holiday season. Those who did book after the holiday season will be moved to the other two cabins, though it might not be quite the same experience.

"Cabin 11 was our bigger cabin. It was a five-bedroom cabin. It was the biggest cabin we have," she said.

It is uncertain whether the cabins will be rebuilt. Karen said the damage has not yet been looked at by an insurance representative. Ideal Fire Chief Mike Clasen said he did not have any comments concerning the fire at this time.

About 30-40 firefighters from the three departments worked to extinguish the fire, transporting water drawn from Whitefish Lake at a nearby dry hydrant, according to the Brainerd Dispatch. After remaining on scene for most of Friday, firefighters returned Saturday, Nov. 29, when fire rekindled.
