Volunteers help make holidays brighter in Pine River, Backus

How Pine River and Backus area volunteers are helping out.

For Thanksgiving, the Pine River Area Food Shelf gave out turkeys, pies and all the fixings on Nov. 19 so Pine River and Backus area residents could enjoy the holiday with family and friends. Community members who came for the Thanksgiving meal box were so grateful expressing their thanks to the volunteers.

Thanksgiving Eve, the CommUnity Meals Program gave out hot Thanksgiving dinners at the American Legion in Pine River. Chef Brian Chaffee had an assembly line working to fill the containers. Outreach volunteers packed the meals in bags and volleyball girls ran them out to cars. Drivers volunteered to drive meals to people unable to venture out. Many other volunteers filled in the gaps. In the first hour, 400 meals were given out.

Volunteer power made this happen. So many people are willing to give of their time to uplift neighbors in need.

Christmas boxes for the food shelf neighbors will be given out this month. Hams, scalloped potatoes, Christmas cookies and veggies will be included in the boxes.

Neighbors in need are encouraged to come into the food shelf and pick up groceries. Privacy is always maintained. No information beyond numbers is shared with anyone or any service.
