Six to compete in Miss Nisswa Scholarship Pageant

Six Little Miss Nisswa second-graders also will participate in pageant on April 10 at Nisswa Elementary School

The 2021 Miss Nisswa contestants are (top row) Carsyn Krassas, Sonja Palmer, Samantha Jackson, (bottom row) Nicole Nix, Mary Moore, and Brittany Joyce.

Six girls will compete for the titles of Miss Nisswa, Miss Nisswa First Princess and Miss Nisswa Congeniality, and six second-graders will have the opportunity to be selected as one of three Little Miss Nisswa girls.

The 49th annual Miss Nisswa Scholarship Pageant and 30th annual Little Miss Nisswa program will start at 6:30 p. m. Saturday, April 10, at Nisswa Elementary School.

Miss Nisswa contestants are Carsyn Krassas, Sonja Palmer, Nicole Nix, Brittany Joyce, Mary Moore and Samantha Jackson.

Little Miss Nisswa candidates are Isla Conkins, Olivia Waagmeester, Charlotte Halvorson, Brynn Uhrich, Lucy Smith and Josephine Snook.

Educational scholarships are: $3,000 to Miss Nisswa plus a $2,000 Dale Carnegie prize package, $1,500 to Miss Nisswa First Princess, and $500 for Miss Nisswa Congeniality.


Monetary awards are also given to winners in other competition areas: $100 each to the interview, talent and essay winners. Areas of competition include essay, personal interview, talent, evening gown and on-stage question.

Each Miss Nisswa and Little Miss Nisswa contestant will receive a gift bag of items donated by sponsors simply for participating in the pageant. Organizations, individuals and businesses in Nisswa and the surrounding communities have been generous with monetary donations, gift certificates and services.

The audience may vote for one Miss Nisswa contestant and one Little Miss Nisswa participant; each will receive a basket full of prizes in the "Nisswa Votes" portion of the pageant.

Silent auction items will be listed on the Nisswa Youth Scholarship Facebook page prior to the event and will be available at the pageant. Roses will also be available for purchase.

Tickets for all ages are $5 advanced purchase only as COVID-19 restrictions limit attendance.

Following is information about each Miss Nisswa contestant:

Carsyn Krassas (March 2021)


Carsyn Krassas

  • School: Senior at Brainerd High School.
  • Interests: Key Club community volunteer, currently in the process of obtaining her private pilot's license, new and adventurous activities, most things STEM related.
  • Future plans: She has committed to Minnesota State University Mankato next fall to earn a degree in aeronautical science, then start her piloting career with Delta Airlines.

Sonja Palmer (March 2021)

Sonja Palmer

  • School: Junior at Pequot Lakes High School.
  • Interests: National Honor Society, Student Council, 4-H, volunteer in the community, arts, volleyball, track, writing, raising chickens.
  • Future plans: Attend a four-year college majoring in mass communications and marketing, then pursue a career at a news station, radio or daily paper.

Samantha Jackson (March 2021)

Samantha Jackson

  • School: Senior at Pequot Lakes High School.
  • Interests: National Honor Society, Student Council, volunteering in the community, dance, band.
  • Future plans: I will attend the University of North Dakota majoring in nursing, then work in a neonatal intensive care unit.


Nicole Nix (March 2021)

Nicole Nix

  • School: Junior at Brainerd High School.
  • Interests: Sports activities with previous experience in competitive soccer, helping others, volunteering, baking.
  • Future plans: I would like to attend Central Lakes College in Brainerd and pursue a career in nursing.

Mary Moore (March 2021)

Mary Moore

  • School: Senior at Brainerd High School.
  • Interests: Volunteering in the community, Robotics, STEM related activities, piano, math tutor.
  • Future plans: I will study computer science in college focusing on artificial intelligence and robotics.

Brittany Joyce (March 2021)

Brittany Joyce


  • School: Junior at Pequot Lakes High School.
  • Interests: Youth Group, volunteering in the community, National Honor Society, Student Council, volleyball, track, band, snowmobiling.
  • Future plans: Undecided plans for college, but will attend a four-year college.
