New rules at transfer station makes furniture disposal more difficult

The city of Pine River will work with Cass County Environmental Services for City Wide Cleanup Days from 9 a.m. to 3 p.m. Tuesday and Wednesday, May 4-5.

Those who would like the city to pick up their items for disposal must register with Pine River City Hall by Monday, May 3, to be included.

All items must be curbside before May 4. While there are items that can be disposed of for free, major furniture now requires a $5 fee that must be paid in advance before items will be picked up or put on the list for pickup.

Items that can be picked up without a charge include:

  • Stoves.
  • Washers.
  • Dryers.
  • Refrigerators.
  • Hot water heaters.
  • Tires that are off the rim.
  • Items that are 80% steel or more, including bicycles, scrap metal and barbecue grills.
  • Branches and tree limbs.

With a $5 payment, stuffed couches and chairs and mattresses can be disposed of, but not wooden furniture.
The city will not pick up light bulbs, lumber, oil filters, vacuums, grass or leaves, paints, cleaners, pesticides, televisions, microwaves or computers.

Items should be separated into piles, boxes or bags. Nonresidents are not allowed to bring items into the city for pickup. Disregard for this rule increases cost to city and tax funds and may hinder continuation of the program.

For more information and to register, call city hall at 218-587-2440. For more information about item disposal, call the Cass County Transfer Station at 218-587-3500.
