The fiesta of fall foliage fills me with a sense of the splendor of nature while driving through our backroads. When trees line both sides of the road, it feels like I’m riding through a majestic tunnel created to remind me how fortunate I am to live here.

As our land goes dormant in preparation for winter, it signals greater problems for our neighbors in need - loss of jobs, home heating costs, gas prices, inflated cost of groceries. The Pine River-Backus Family Center has support staff ready to help you find resources for these issues.

The Pine River Area Food Shelf (a family center program) is open two days a week if you need groceries. Plans are in place for special meal boxes for Thanksgiving and Christmas. Getting together with family and friends for a good meal is what makes the holidays special.

Thanksgiving boxes for our neighbors in need will be distributed during regular food shelf hours from 10 a.m. to 1 p.m. Friday, Nov. 19. Sign in as a client by picking up groceries during our regular food shelf hours: 10 a.m. to 1 p.m. Tuesdays and Fridays, except the second Tuesday when hours are 3:30-6 p.m.

The free CommUnity Meals will not be served Monday or Thursday the week of Nov. 21-27. Instead, a free hot Thanksgiving meal will be served curbside from the Pine River American Legion from 4-6 p.m. (or until gone) Wednesday, Nov. 24.
