Pequot Lakes High School graduate Matthew Fabian has a lot of admirers in his community. That much is obvious when an unexpected group decided to start a fundraiser to help him in his fight against cancer.

"The Pequot Lakes senior class of 2021 approached me about having a fundraiser through DQ," Pequot Lakes Dairy Queen owner Lisa Kaneski said by email. "We will be hosting this fundraiser on Sept. 30 at both the Pequot and Nisswa DQ locations."

Kaneski agreed to donate 20% of sales Wednesday, Sept. 30, toward Fabian's fight with cancer. Members of the senior class will assist with running food and cleaning throughout the day.

Fabian, who graduated from Pequot Lakes in 2018, had his fall plans at Bemidji State University interrupted when he was diagnosed with medulloblastoma in July. Since that time he has undergone surgery to remove a growth on his brain, suffered a stroke and pneumonia and has been fighting back with radiation therapy.

While at Pequot Lakes High School, Fabian was well known. He was honored as 19th in the nation among trap shooters, lettered in football, track and speech and was a member of band while maintaining grades at the top of his class.
