Opal Johnson, of Pine River, is the oldest resident of the Good Samaritan Society system at 110 years old. She celebrated her birthday Saturday, Dec. 21, surrounded by family and friends.

Johnson has been at the Good Samaritan Society in Pine River for approximately 10 years.

Johnson is well regarded by local residents, especially former students. Johnson taught at a one-room Whitefish school from 1928-30, starting at age 18. She worked at a time when she had to walk a long distance to the schoolhouse where she taught eight grade levels in one room and had students with typhoid fever and scarlet fever.

She taught at other schools as well, including in the long-gone Mildred school as well as in Moorhead and Pine River.

One of Johnson's former students, Irene White, made it to the birthday party along with a large group of family and friends. Johnson enjoyed three pieces of the cake that was decorated with 110 candles all aglow.
