PR-B Family Center: Fundraiser will help fill shelves at food shelf

Winters can be a harsh time here in God's country. We spend our energy trying to keep warm, navigating icy roads and trying to schedule our lives around approaching snowstorms.

Add to these job layoffs, family emergencies and health issues and life gets even more complicated. Putting a hot meal on the table becomes harder for families struggling financially.

The Pine River Area Food Shelf had 144 new families last year plus 61 new families this year. Lower Cass County is considered a "food desert" because of our poverty ratio plus lack of accessibility to fresh food. The food shelf has had to purchase many products that used to be available at low or free costs. This makes it harder to keep our shelves and freezers stocked.

Sunday, Oct. 21, is our annual fundraiser called Soups and Sweets. The best of the best in soup selections are generously donated to us by Bites Grill & Barl, Jr's BBQ from Crosslake, The Corner Store, Cozy Cottage Cafe and A-Pine Restaurant.

Area businesses and friends have donated specialty items for our silent auction. Donations are still being accepted if you have a gift to share.

The event will take place from 11 a.m. to 1 p.m. at the American Legion Post 613 along Highway 371 in Pine River. Price is $8 per person, $5 for children under age 10 and a maximum of $25 for a family. Our volunteers have been hard at work organizing this event and baking goodies for dessert.

We extend you our warmest invitation to join us Sunday, Oct. 21. Your presence will help us stock our shelves to serve the hungry families in our community over the winter.

Call us at 218-587-4292 with questions. Stop by our Pine River-Backus Family Center on Barclay Avenue for a cup o' joe any time.
