Marcy Fyle and Debbie Nelson, of Pequot Lakes, and Mary Kay Gilman, of Pine River, competed in the regional speech festival. Nelson qualified for the state festival in the serious interpretation category.

The Minnesota Resort Association has launched a “Labor Day to Memorial Day” drive to convince schools to shorten their calendar years. Sue Leagjeld, of Driftwood Family Resort, chairs the committee.

Nisswa fifth-grader Erick Anderson is one of 10 students in the state named to the Minnesota AAA School Safety Hall of Fame.
Mike Shamp is named Pine River’s Outstanding Citizen for 1997.

The Ideal Fire Department practiced fighting a fire on a blazing cabin at the former Piney Ridge Resort on Upper Whitefish Lake.
Both Pequot Lakes and Pine River-Backus schools form trap shooting teams for the spring season.
