Pine River-Backus School's drive-thru Veterans Day event was a hit.
Though the school's annual Veterans Day assembly was canceled due to COVID-19 safety concerns, the student council still wanted to thank area veterans for their service. To that end, they filled 100 goody bags to hand out in a drive-thru thank you event Wednesday, Nov. 11.
During the event, students lined up on the school sidewalk with flags and signs while 26 bags were given out to veterans driving through the school parking lot. The remaining goody bags were dropped off at local American Legion and VFW posts.
"Given the short amount of time we had to put this together I would say it was a success," said Aimee Wilson, student council adviser. "Anything we can do to put a smile on someone's face and make their day a little brighter is a win in my book.
"I'm most proud of what the kids came away with. They saw that small acts of kindness can make an impact on people. I kept hearing things such as: 'They were the sweetest,' 'So thankful' and 'This is so fun to do something nice for people.' My only regret is we didn't think of this sooner so we could have gotten the word out more," Wilson said.
