Decorators are working hard to bring a little bit of Christmas cheer to the Nisswa area early, and to raise money for the Lakes Area Food Shelf in the process.

The annual Nisswa Christmas Home Tour to benefit the food shelf will run Thursday-Saturday, Oct. 18-20. Two area homes will be open to tour, decorated by design and home decor businesses The Woodland Meadow, The Green Porch and Buffalo Plaid, all located in downtown Nisswa. The decorators spend two and a half weeks preparing the tour homes with the help of volunteers.

"You see that this is us, that we enjoy what we do," said Jess Johnson of The Woodland Meadow. "We're happy when other people that have come on the tour all these years enjoy it just as much."

A portion of proceeds from ticket sales pay for the shuttle service offered, but the rest is given to the Lakes Area Food Shelf.

"It's one of our largest fundraisers," said Rick Paine, food shelf president.

Johnson said that knowing they can give back to the community is great.

"It's the most important part of why we do this," she said.

The event is a fundraiser first, but it also allows people to see what the decorators and their businesses have to offer. Often, people on the tour will later visit the individual stores, inspired by the designs.

"The best way to describe the relationship between the food shelf and the designers is that it's a win-win," said Paine.

Home tour tickets are on sale online through lafshometour.com or in person at The Woodland Meadow in Nisswa. Shuttle service is provided from the Nisswa Chamber of Commerce.
