The September meeting of the Breezy Point Area Women's Club was held at Billy's Restaurant in Breezy Point with guest speaker Lisa Slepica, who shared her experiences with the group Midwives for Haiti.

Slepica has been volunteering with the group since 2013. Midwives for Haiti is based out of Richmond, Virginia. The volunteer nurses work alongside a staff of Haitians to train them in becoming midwives. Most women in Haiti deliver their babies unattended. Since this is a common practice, Midwives for Haiti also trains others in what to do if a baby isn't breathing. These babies are left unaided without other neighborhood women given training.

Many touching stories were shared, and group members learned how they could help through sewing projects.

Sarah Reichardt, the club's scholarship recipient, gave a short talk on her plans to become a nurse. Heather Gfoerer, also a scholarship recipient, was unable to attend but sent a voice message of her plans.

The club will meet Wednesday, Oct. 3, at Palmer's Grill at Deacon's Lodge. Andrea Martin will speak about Bridges of Hope. Doors open at 11 a.m. with lunch served at 11:30 a.m.

Anyone interested in joining should call Sue K. at 651-463-3080 or Mary Lou M. at 612-723-9131.
