Walters opens Black Bear Outdoor Power Specialties
Tom Walters, former owner of the bowling alley in Pine River for 23 years, has reverted to a passion he had long before getting into the business of pins and balls.
"I did it before I bought the bowling center," Walters said. "It's what I like to do, so I'm getting back into it."
Walters revived a piece of property outside of town that once housed the Black Bear Country Club clubhouse. He kept a reference to the old name, calling his business Black Bear Outdoor Power Specialties. There he will repair small engines for yard equipment like lawn mowers, snow blowers, trimmers and chainsaws.
Walters had experience performing similar repairs for Ace in Pine River for 10 years before moving on to run the bowling alley.
"It's just what I've always liked to do since I was a little kid," Walters said. "I just kind of grew into it."
Walters had considered getting back into engine repair before selling the bowling alley approximately one year ago. He purchased the former clubhouse location last summer in preparation for his new business.
He is open 9 a.m. to 1 p.m. during the slow winter season, and summer hours will be 8 a.m. to 5 p.m. Appointments for after hours can be made by calling 218-513-4704.
