The Region Five Development Commission in Staples received a 2014 Excellence in Regional Transportation Award from the National Association of Development Organizations (NADO) for its Resilient Region Policies - Sustainable Community Comprehensive Plan Language and Ordinances.
NADO is a Washington, D.C.-based association that promotes programs and policies to strengthen local governments, communities and economies through regional cooperation, program delivery and comprehensive strategies.
The Excellence in Regional Transportation Awards showcase organizations for noteworthy projects and practices in rural and small metropolitan transportation planning, program delivery and special initiatives.
Award winners received national recognition at the 2014 National Rural Transportation Peer Learning Conference on Dec. 3-5 in Cincinnati, Ohio.
In addition to crafting the Resilient Region Plan itself, the Region Five Development Commission and its partners created model codes and policy recommendations that could be used by local units of government throughout the region to create more walkable, bikable and transit-friendly communities.
