Nurse practitioners Melissa Nelson and Jamie Westerman join the Family Medicine Team at the Essentia Health St. Joseph's-Pine River Clinic in Pine River.

The Pine River Clinic, located at 415 Barclay Ave., offers primary care and specialty care in the areas of cardiology, general surgery and urology, led by physicians S. Fisker and David Laposky.

With the addition of Nelson and Westerman to the Pine River team, clinic hours expanded to 8 a.m. to 6 p.m. Monday through Friday.

"I believe that physical wellness and mental health go hand in hand, and that patient care begins with good listening," said Nelson. "I want my patients to know that I am here for them."

Nelson earned a master's degree in nursing from the College of St. Scholastica in Duluth. She is certified as a family nurse practitioner by the American Academy of Nurse Practitioners.

"I have a passion for people. Everyone has a story to tell, and it's amazing what I learn on a daily basis," Nelson said. "My goal is to determine what motivates patients to be healthy so we can work together to create the best plan for good health and wellness."

Nelson has worked in health care for 15 years and has a family of her own, giving her an advantage when it comes to caring for the variety of patients she sees in family practice. "I have experienced a lot in my life, and that helps me to connect with my patients on a personal level," she said.

After working for the past eight years as a registered nurse in emergency medicine, Westerman looks forward to continuing her career in family practice.

"I enjoyed working in the emergency room for many reasons, but I missed having follow-through with my patients," she said. "I love forming relationships and look forward to that aspect of working in family medicine."

Westerman earned a master's degree in nursing from the University of North Dakota in Grand Forks, N.D. She is certified as a family nurse practitioner by the American Academy of Nurse Practitioners.

"I treat my patients the way I would want a member of my family to be treated," said Westerman. "When a patient is in my care, it's very personal to me."
