Rendezvous Brewing in Hackensack will have a grand opening Saturday, Aug. 1.

After opening June 27 for takeout only and opening the taproom July 3, the brewery is ready to throw open the doors and serve more customers. Grand opening hours will be noon-8 p.m. A new beer may be released for the occasion.

“We started out with soft openings to allow for us to build up our supply and selection of beers,” Doug Toth, head brewer and co-owner with his wife, Sue, said in a news release. “You don’t want to run out of beer with a customer at the counter.”

The brewery has been having soft openings and enjoying the patrons who follow it on Facebook, where most of the information regarding the brewery and its beer releases has been shared.

“It is fun to come home after a busy day and see that patrons have posted pictures of themselves enjoying a growler of your beer on the dock or at the campfire,” Sue said in the news release.

The brewery was Doug’s idea. Although Sue was the one who grew up in Hackensack, their family had always spent as much time there as possible. Retiring there was always expected, but Doug wanted to do something more, too. They agreed that by starting a business, they could give back to the community they both enjoy. Starting a brewery would be their way to provide a place for people to congregate and share a couple of pints.

The couple was excited to find a building close to the Paul Bunyan Trail, the statue of Lucette, the boat landing and Chamber of Commerce, and yet only a block off Highway 371. It is only five blocks from where Sue grew up and you can view the beautiful sunsets over Birch Lake from the large picture windows in the front.

The building is almost 5,000 square feet, but has been designed to make you feel like you are in a more intimate space. One room is set aside as a party room or meeting space, but can be used as additional taproom seating if needed.

The beer brewed at the Rendezvous is unique also. The first batch to come out of the five barrel system was similar to what Sue’s grandfather, Pat Harrington, might have brewed back in the '50s when he and his wife, Laura, operated the original Rendezvous, which was located across town where the Birchwood Char House is located.

The couple decided to call it Chapter One, since it is the beginning of their new story. And although it sold out in two weeks, they have continued to brew it and decided it will be a staple on the menu.

Currently there are two other beers on the menu, Hopmazing and Smilin’ Eyes. Hopmazing is a double dry hopped Northeastern IPA and Smilin’ Eyes is a dry Irish Stout. They also have a non-alcoholic offering of Kombucha, brewed in Baxter by Ya Sure Kombucha.

Rendezvous is located at 112 South First Street in Hackensack. Regular hours are noon to 6 p.m. Wednesday-Saturday and noon to 5 p.m. Sunday.
