PEQUOT LAKES -- Defense turned offense was the magic formula for the Pequot Lakes Patriots Tuesday. The No. 2 seed of the South Subsection 7-2A bracket forced No. 7 Aitkin into 10 first-half turnovers and opened up a 35-21 halftime lead. The Patriots’ defense never let up leading to a 70-41 victory in the opening round of the playoffs. Pequot scored seven points off of those early turnovers and held the Gobblers to just 35-percent shooting in the opening half. After Aitkin’s Kade Hopperstad opened the game with a 3, Pequot burst out on a 9-0 run and never trailed again. The Patriots rattled off two 10-0 runs in the first half to build a 32-13 edge before the Gobblers finished the half with an 8-3 run for the 35-21 halftime score. “I think, from a pressure standpoint, we feel like we’re deeper than anybody else,” said Pequot head coach Rich Spiczka. “That works to our advantage because we’re able to cycle guys in and wear people out. Tonight it was more about putting them into a funk as far as thinking about everything, which they did. That was a big piece of what we were after. We didn’t want them to just play. We wanted them to have to execute something and dissect something.
