Pine River-Backus was defeated 74-36 by the host Crosby-Ironton Rangers on Tuesday, Feb. 12. The game remained close early on, but became a blowout during the second half. The Rangers started the game with a long-range basket for three points to take an early lead. C-I didn’t stop there, scoring the first seven points of the game on a fast break layup and another basket inside on an offensive rebound before PR-B made their first basket of the night.
Beau Howard tallied 20 points, seven assists, and four steals to lead Pine River-Backus as the Tigers fell to Northome-Kelliher 63-50 in Saturday’s Northland Conference game. Zach Struss scored 11 for the Tigers as their losing skid was extended to 19 games. PR-B, which dropped to 1-10 in the conference and 1-21 overall, was scheduled to play Crosby-Ironton on Tuesday, Feb. 12. Northome-Kelliher 32 31 — 63 Pine River-Backus 18 32 — 50
The traveling Pine River-Backus team played well, but came up short against the Menahga Braves in a 65-49 loss on Thursday, Jan. 31. The Tigers were able to play a strong game for much of the first half, and appeared to be headed for an upset before ultimately falling short. The game saw many lead changes early in the game until Menahga made a run before the half and never again relinquished the lead.
The Pine River-Backus boys’ basketball team was soundly defeated by the host Walker-Hackensack-Akeley Wolves 68-36 on Tuesday, Jan. 22. The Wolves were able to start the game on a hot streak, with a 14-2 run that would put the Tigers in a deficit that they would be unable to overcome. W-H-A did the bulk of their scoring on inside shots, for which the Tigers did not have an answer. Despite remaining competitive the rest of the first half, the game would become a blow-out during the second half.
Cass Lake-Bena defeated the host Pine River-Backus Tigers boys’ basketball team 77-43 on Tuesday, Jan. 8. PR-B had an excellent performance by senior point guard Beau Howard, who had 20 points on a nine for 17 night from the field, but it wasn’t enough to beat a tough CL-B team.
The Blackduck Drakes boys’ basketball team defeated the visiting Pine River-Backus Tigers 65-27 on Friday, Dec. 4. The Drakes got out to an early lead before the Tigers came roaring back to take the lead back early in the first half. However, poor shooting for PR-B combined with good outside shooting and a solid inside game by the Drakes would prove to be too much for the Tigers.
Beau Howard led Pine River-Backus in scoring with 16 points in the Tigers’ 69-44 loss to the visiting Pequot Lakes Patriots in non-conference boys’ basketball action on Thursday, Dec. 20. Travis Jacobson scored a game-high 28 points while Jordan Redmond added 17 to lead Pequot Lakes, who improve to 4-3 overall. The Tigers fall to 1-6 overall. PR-B was scheduled to host a holiday tournament on Friday and Saturday, Dec. 21-22. The Tigers were to face Henning on Dec. 21.
The Pine River-Backus boys’ basketball team opened the season against Cass Lake-Bena with an 81-70 loss on Thursday, Nov. 29, in Cass Lake. Despite the loss, the Tigers had an important milestone and a admirable individual performance by guard Beau Howard. The senior came into the game needing 23 points to reach the 1,000-career point plateau, a feat only accomplished by six other players in PR-B history. Howard was able to put up 32 points, including going an impressive 10-for-10 from the free-throw line.
