Before World War II the people of the United States were for isolationism — not wanting to be involved in European wars. This all changed on Dec. 7, 1941, with the bombing of Pearl Harbor. The United States went from the 17th largest army in 1941 to the strongest military force in the world by 1945. Young men who had no idea where to find Pearl Harbor joined long lines of future veterans signing up for military service.
Pequot Lakes/Pine River-Backus Road Crew wrestlers Anthony Philipson, Justin Mackenthun and Jared Adkins each won one of three matches in individual competition at the Class AA state tournament on Friday and Saturday, Feb. 27 and March 1, at the Xcel Energy Center in St. Paul. Philipson (106 pounds) and Mackenthun (182) lost their opening matches before splitting a pair of matches in the wrestleback round. Adkins (heavyweight) won his opening match before losing in the quarterfinals and in the wrestlebacks.
Pequot Lakes/Pine River-Backus Road Crew seniors Anthony Philipson (106 pounds) and Justin Mackenthun (182) each won titles while Jared Adkins (285) was second at the Section 8AA individual wrestling tournament on Saturday, Feb. 22, at Perham. Philipson (30-2 overall), Mackenthun (29-3) and Adkins (25-7) advance to the Class AA state individual competition starting at 11 a.m. on Friday, Feb. 28, at the Xcel Energy Center in St. Paul. Semifinals and championship matches will be on Saturday, March 1.
Pequot Lakes/Pine River-Backus Road Crew, 15-4 overall, will next compete at the Section 8AA team tournament on Saturday, Feb. 15, in Thief River Falls. Section individual competition will be Saturday, Feb. 22. The section team winner advances to the Class AA state wrestling tournament on Feb. 27 to March 1, at the Xcel Energy Center in St. Paul. Teams will wrestle at state on Feb. 27, with individuals at 11 a.m. on Feb. 28 As for section team competition, Perham should be seeded No. 1 while the Road Crew is also among the contenders.
On Feb. 9, four young men from Liverpool, England, landed on the shores of America — on the stage of the “Ed Sullivan Show” — and the United States and the world have never been the same. They not only changed our music, but they changed our culture. Some writers put the invasion by the Beatles and the assassination of J.F. Kennedy in the same paragraph, if not in the same sentence. That this nation lost its innocence in Dallas, and with the Beatles this country was rejuvenated.
The Road Crew middle level wrestlers went to Brainerd to match up with 21 other schools on Sunday, Feb. 2. The Road Crew placed ahead of schools much larger schools such as Brainerd, Bemidji, Little Falls and St. Cloud Tech. Foley was first with 316.5 points and Perham second with 203. The Road Crew had 136.5. The Road Crew’s Spencer Richards and Justin Neamann were champions while Evan Gravdahl and Devyn Richards placed second.
The Pequot Lakes/Pine River-Backus Road Crew wrestlers split a Mid-State Conference triangular against Wadena-Deer Creek and Detroit Lakes on Friday, Jan. 31. The Road Crew dominated the Wolverines 72-4, but was edged by Detroit Lakes 40-22. Road Crew coach Travis Hoffarth expected the match against the Lakers to be close. ”We were missing four from our starting lineup and put in (junior varsity) wrestlers,” he said. “Last year, we defeated Detroit Lakes (36-27) during the season, but they defeated us 33-22 in the section semifinals.”
Jared Adkins earned his 75th career win on a pin at 285 pounds as the Pequot Lakes/Pine River-Backus Road Crew defeated Sauk Centre/Melrose 57-13 and Dassel-Cokato 39-25 in wrestling dual meets on Friday, Jan. 17. Adkins, Isaac Manthei (113), Spencer Richards (120), Nick Gravdahl (152), Justin Mackenthun (182) and Cadel Roeder (220) all won twice for the Road Crew, who improved to 14-1 overall. The Road Crew was scheduled to wrestle at Perham on Tuesday, Jan. 21, and then wrestle at the Mid-State Conference tournament on Saturday, Jan. 25, in Staples.
The Pequot Lakes/Pine River-Backus Road Crew remained unbeaten by sweeping Staples-Motley 51-9 and Park Rapids 66-7 in a pair of Mid-State Conference wrestling matches on Friday, Jan. 3. Anthony Philipson (113 pounds), Spencer Richards (120), Brandon Mager (126), Justin Mackenthun (195) and Jared Adkins (285) all won two matches for the Road Crew, who improve to 3-0 in the conference and 8-0 overall.
The Pequot Lakes-Pine River-Backus Road Crew finished sixth out of 33 teams at the Big Bear tournament on Friday and Saturday, Dec. 20-21, in Cass Lake. Brandon Mager had the Road Crew’s top finish as he placed second at 126 pounds. Anthony Philipson (113) and Nick Gravdahl (152) both finished fourth for the Road Crew while Tristan Rubner (152) and Ozzie Miller (160) were fifth, and Jared Adkins (285) was seventh.
