Our church has one of those signs out front on which we have three lines to put messages or announcements on. It was custom made by DJ and Mary Hall. It has been great fun to come up with pithy, witty, inspirational, challenging, thought provoking, even humorous sayings to draw attention to our church in the woods. Our church isn't in a place that a person normally drives by on the way to a store, restaurant or anything except Chatham Park, Dream Island, or Wilderness Park. See! You don't know where those places are either!
This past summer I had the good fortune of many vacation Sundays. There were wonderful people preaching for me while I was off. (Some of my congregation insists that I am always somewhat “off”, even when I am present. Perhaps that is part of my pastoral charm!) I confess that I did not go to church on my days off. I had no autographed bulletins from other churches to prove I went to worship, yet there was value in my time away from Sunday morning worship. As I share my observations, see how many of these you can relate to.
For the past two weeks our church has been preparing for a monster garage sale and silent auction to be held this weekend. Several scriptures immediately come to mind as we prepare for this biennial event. “How long O Lord, how long?” “Get behind me, Satan!” “Your ways are not my ways.”
