NISSWA—Devastation was seen Thursday throughout Nashway Road that wraps around the north side of Round Lake, just south of Nisswa. Towering pines that once stood in the heavily wooded area were down everywhere and water crafts and boat lifts on the lake had either turned on their side or flew a few houses down. The hard part for homeowners on Nashway faced with the storm aftermath was the fact this is the second time a severe storm has destroyed their homes and landscapes. A supercell storm hit the same area, about a year ago on July 12, 2015.
Dan Koppy and his girlfriend, Heidi Mouch, were out cruising Cross Lake Saturday afternoon on their 1996 Sea Ray boat to meet some friends when they heard a loud, sudden noise. Koppy said Monday he didn't know what the noise was. He opened the cover to the engine and saw flames. He attempted to put it out with a fire extinguisher, but realized the fire was too big to do it on his own. "I knew we couldn't stay there," Koppy said. "The smoke was so heavy." Koppy and Mouch began waving to other boaters around them for help, as they were beginning to panic.

It's that time again, where Brainerd lakes area residents will be able to smell those delicious corn dogs, the sweet cotton candy, the fried cheese curds and of course all the scents of the animals as the Crow Wing County Fair opens Tuesday. The county fair runs Tuesday through Saturday on the county fairgrounds located on 2000 13th St. SE, Brainerd. The fair opens at 8 a.m. Tuesday, but Kids Kountry, Butterfly House and the exhibits open at 10 a.m. each day. The Midway opens at 3 p.m. Tuesday and at noon the remaining days.
Former Central Lakes College Instructor Joe Plut - known as the "Mad Hugger" - has made an imprint on many in the Brainerd lakes area and beyond in his lifetime. His laughter can be heard a mile away, he always has a smile on his face, but most of all he greets every person he meets with a hug. Plut is turning 80 and from 2-5 p.m. Monday, on the Fourth of July, there will be a birthday celebration at Prairie Bay in Baxter.
PEQUOT LAKES—Grassland and some trees and brush burned Tuesday afternoon north of The Preserve golf course at Grand View Lodge in Pequot Lakes. Minnesota Department of Natural Resources forestry crews along with firefighters from the Pequot Lakes and Nisswa fire departments were called about 2 p.m. to battle the fire.
When a Crosslake family came in from boating Friday night, June 24, they found their garage with living quarters was full of smoke. The Crosslake Fire Department was called at 10 p.m. to a structure fire on the 36000 block of Pine Bay Drive in Crosslake. Crosslake Assistant Fire Chief Neil Luzar said when firefighters arrived on scene the detached garage was full of smoke and they sent in a three-man team for entry. Luzar said the fire crew found the fire and extinguished it quickly.
