Whether it's Minnesota Severe Weather Awareness Week to an investigation, the Crow Wing County Sheriff's Office plans to share information more prominently via social media. The sheriff's office launched its official Facebook page April 6. The sheriff's office was under the umbrella of the Crow Wing County's Facebook page, but decided after much research to have its own page. Capt. Scott Goddard of the sheriff's office, who is administering the page, said the sheriff's office found a model they like for their Facebook page.
First responders dressed in "gumby suits" and equipped with ropes and sleds rescued two anglers who'd fallen through the ice on area lakes in separate incidents Monday, March 27. Another angler fell through the ice and was rescued Tuesday, March 28. The first ice rescue was reported around 2:15 p.m. Monday on Big Portage Lake in rural Backus; the second rescue was reported about 3 p.m. Monday on Gladstone Lake in Nisswa; and the third occurred at 12:55 p.m. Tuesday on Hubert Lake east of Nisswa.

There's a new captain in town. A new captain in the Crow Wing County Sheriff's Office - that is, Capt. Scott Goddard. Goddard, of Breezy Point, is not new to the sheriff's office, housed in the Law Enforcement Center in Brainerd. He has been with the sheriff's office for 22 years. "This is incredible," Goddard said after a recent pinning ceremony at the LEC where Crow Wing County Sheriff Todd Dahl promoted Goddard from lieutenant to captain. Dahl also promoted Deputy Tyler Burke to patrol sergeant.
PEQUOT LAKES—One of the most horrendous crash scenes area law enforcement officers said they have ever seen in their career occurred Thursday when a semitrailer and Ford truck crashed head-on, ignited into flames, and killed a driver. A 60-year-old Pequot Lakes man was killed in the crash, which was reported at 6:31 a.m. on Highway 371, south of Pequot Lakes in Sibley Township in Crow Wing County.
WALKER, Minn. — The defense attorney for a Coon Rapids man accused in the murder and sexual assault of 5-year-old Alayna Jeanne Ertl last summer wants transcripts from a grand jury's indictment released for review. Zachary Todd Anderson, 25, appeared Wednesday, Feb. 8, in Cass County District Court, where public defender Corey Allen Harbott requested release of the documents. Cass County Attorney Christopher Strandlie, who is prosecuting the case, said the request is common in cases in which a grand jury is convened.
A motorist found out the hard way Monday night that no ice is safe. Ben Olmscheid of Breezy Point was driving his full-size Ford pickup on the ice in the channel of Halverson Bay, on the north end of Pelican Lake in Pelican Township near Breezy Point, when the ice gave way and the truck dropped into the water. Olmscheid and a passenger in the truck escaped uninjured through the sunroof of the truck. Olmscheid called his father's friend, who was fishing on Pelican Lake at the time, to come help them.
An 18-year-old Pillager High School student was killed in a two-vehicle collision Tuesday night on Highway 210 west of Brainerd. The crash that took Devin Shawn Alexander's life was reported at 6:36 p.m. Tuesday on Highway 210, 1 mile west of Cass County Road 1 in Sylvan Township.
