LAPORTE, Minn. — A 42-year-old Iowa man and his 4-year-old child died after their kayak overturned on Hart Lake on Saturday, May 19. The Hubbard County Sheriff’s Office responded to the lake at about 1:26 p.m. Saturday after a family member of the victims reported that the kayak had overturned and not come up to the surface of the water.
LAMBERTON, Minn. — A southern Minnesota man is dead after being trapped inside a grain bin. According to the Redwood County Sheriff's Department, Mark Arkell, 46, of Lamberton was pronounced dead at the scene of the incident, which was reported at 5:28 p.m. Friday, May 18, in rural Lamberton. When rescue personnel arrived, Arkell was "completely submerged in grain and rescue attempts were unsuccessful," according to a press release.
CLOQUET, Minn. -- Authorities are investigating the death of a worker at paper and pulp mill in Cloquet on Tuesday, May 15. “We are shocked and saddened to confirm the death of Mr. Ryan Martin,” Sappi corporate spokeswoman Olga Karagiannis wrote in an email Wednesday. “Sappi is investigating and working with authorities to understand the cause of death.” The company did not offer any further information on the circumstances of Martin’s death. Cloquet Police Department and Minnesota Department of Labor and Industry officials also did not immediately have further details.

SUPERIOR, Wis. — The Wisconsin Department of Natural Resources reported at a community meeting Monday, May 14, there has been no impact on the city's drinking water following the Husky Energy refinery fire last month, though additional testing is underway. Superior Mayor Jim Paine said he was confident about the safety of Superior's drinking water since the fire. Paine said he drank tap water from Lake Superior during the meeting.
FORADO, Minn. — A man who was assaulted outside of a bar and grill has died from his injuries. Steven "Beaver" Hlinsky, 46, a long-time Forada firefighter, died Sunday afternoon, May 13, at his home, according to the Douglas County Sheriff's Office, which received a 911 call from the Hlinsky residence. Hlinsky, who was unresponsive when first responders arrived, was pronounced and an autopsy has been ordered, according to the Sheriff's Office.
DETROIT LAKES, Minn. -- An Alexandria, Minn., man was arrested Saturday, May 12, after a high-speed chase through Becker County. According to a report released by the Becker County Sheriff’s Office: About 1:48 p.m. Saturday, the sheriff’s office received a report of an erratic driver travelling west on Minnesota Highway 34 near Minnesota Highway 29.
FARMINGTON, Minn.—A 25-year-old Farmington woman has been released from custody after a search of her rental home where she ran a nonprofit animal rescue operation just outside of the southern Twin Cities suburb uncovered 60 dead cats and more than 40 other animals that were mostly alive. Dakota County Attorney James Backstrom announced Friday, May 11, that Caycee Lynn Bregel would not be charged Friday, and that the matter remains under investigation.
ALEXANDRIA, Minn. -- The man who died from a gunshot wound in his rural home after a shooting about 10 miles northwest of Alexandria Wednesday has been identified as David Wayne Bragg, 43. At this time, no arrests have been made, according to the Douglas County Sheriff's Office, which provided an update late Thursday afternoon, May 10.
AITKIN, Minn. -- A 15-year-old boy was upgraded from critical to serious condition Thursday, May 10, at Hennepin County Medical Center in Minneapolis after being involved in a double fatality crash near McGregor in northern Minnesota.
