MENAHGA, Minn. — A 66-year-old Menahga man has died and another was flown from the scene with serious injuries following a two-vehicle crash Friday morning, July 21. The crash happened approximately 1 mile north of Menahga on U.S. Highway 71. The Minnesota State Patrol said Randall Lee Hinz died in the crash.
WILLMAR, Minn. - A 48-year-old woman will serve about six years in the Minnesota Correctional Facility in Shakopee for an assault that left a woman at an addiction recovery center in Willmar with permanent brain damage. Stacie Lee Johnson, of Hibbing, Minn., was sentenced in district court in Kandiyohi County on Monday to prison for a first degree assault conviction.
ALEXANDRIA, Minn. -- An Alexandria woman who died Saturday after falling from the back of a slow-moving pickup near Lake Andrew has been identified as 61-year-old Marilyn Weedman, according to the Douglas County Sheriff’s office. Her husband, Kevin Weedman, was driving the pickup, Sheriff Troy Wolberson said. Alcohol was not a factor and no charges are expected. The sheriff's office received a call at 3:36 p.m. Saturday, July 15, reporting a woman had fallen from a pickup truck south of Alexandria. The woman had a head injury and the caller stated that CPR was in progress.
BEMIDJI, Minn. —Two people were hurt Sunday afternoon when the pickup truck in which they were riding was hit by a train in Beltrami County, about 12 miles west of Bemidji. According to the Beltrami County Sheriff's Office, Janice Callahan, 73, of Chatfield, Minn., was driving the pickup north at about 2:10 p.m. and entered the railroad crossing. The truck was then hit by the train.
FERGUS FALLS, Minn.—A 27-year-old man is in custody following a 2½-hour standoff with police during which he barricaded himself in his home and threatened another resident with a gun. Police were called to the home, on the 700 block of North Vine Street, about 3:45 p.m. Saturday, July 15. Officers tried to persuade Theodore Tiede to surrender. During negotiations, Tiede fired several gunshots from the home.
HIBBING, Minn. -- The Hibbing Police Department responded to a call regarding a dead body Monday afternoon in the 2400 block of First Avenue in Hibbing, the police department reported. Police arrived around 4:39 p.m. to find the body of a deceased man, and called in Hibbing investigators due to the “suspicious circumstances” surrounding the death. Investigators requested additional assistance from the Minnesota Bureau of Criminal Apprehension.
FARGO -- A child is hospitalized at Sanford Children’s Hospital here after being run over by a trailer in a parade in central Minnesota’s Wadena County. The accident happened about 8:30 p.m. on Saturday, July 8, on Highway 87 near Juniper Avenue in Menahga, according to the Minnesota State Patrol.
HEWITT, Minn. -- A Breckenridge, Minn. man was hurt when the car he was driving hit two horses that were standing on a highway in Todd County in central Minnesota. According to the Minnesota State Patrol, the accident happened just west of Hewitt around 10:45 p.m. on Saturday, July 8.
BROOTEN, Minn. — A 16-year-old girl was killed and two men were seriously injured in an accident Wednesday afternoon south of Brooten. According to the Stearns County Sheriff's office, the two-vehicle accident happened around 4:32 p.m. at the intersection of Stearns County roads 18 and 19 in Crow Lake Township, about four miles south of Brooten.
Three northwest Minnesota state parks as of midweek still had openings for campers looking to get away for the Fourth of July holiday weekend, the Department of Natural Resources said. Lake Bronson State Park in Kittson County, Old Mill State Park in Marshall County and Zippel Bay State Park on the south shore of Lake of the Woods all had 10 or more campsites available for four-day stays. Schoolcraft State Park on the Mississippi River near Deer River, Minn., also had at least 10 campsites available.
