WILLMAR, Minn.— Gregory Allen Scheel will not be making road trips to Willmar or Montevideo for court appearances while serving two consecutive life sentences for the murder of his grandparents. Prosecutors in Kandiyohi and Chippewa counties have filed motions dismissing the criminal charges he faced in the two counties—fearing that he could possibly escape or because he is already in prison for life. The charges in the two counties are unrelated to the deaths of Wilbert, 90, and Gloria Scheel, 80, on March 21 at their home in Paynesville.
MONTEVIDEO, Minn. — The former administrator of the Luther Haven nursing home in Montevideo in western Minnesota faces a charge of felony theft. Tamara Noel Borstad, 46, of Appleton, is accused of using the nursing home's credit card and taking cash from its safe to use for gambling. The nursing home calculates it lost $38,812 in money taken and not paid back, including fees and charges, according to a criminal complaint filed Sept. 19 in Chippewa County District Court.
WATSON, Minn.—A century before MapQuest or Google Maps were invented, motorists using one of the country's first coast-to-coast highways followed the "Yellowstone Trail" by watching for chrome yellow markers with an arrow pointing the way to Yellowstone National Park. Two artists are looking to bring those markers back. They started in the small town of Watson, in Chippewa County, with hopes that someday a new rendition of these markers will return to a route that originally ran from Plymouth Rock to Puget Sound.

SPICER, Minn.—Jerome Jakobson's passion for fishing leads him to many of the region's best known waters, everywhere from Devil's Lake in North Dakota and Chamberlain on the Missouri River in South Dakota, to the waters of Lake Michigan at Sturgeon Bay, Wisconsin. And when he lands his boat at any of these locations, there's a fish-cleaning station waiting for him so he can fillet his catch before returning home.
MONTEVIDEO, Minn. — Just six days shy of the second anniversary of the day the body of Sandra Albrecht was buried, a judge's ruling ends her family's legal dispute over what happened at her gravesite — but not the family's division.
MONTEVIDEO, Minn. — For the first time in more years than any of them can remember, nine of the 11 Albrecht children were together with their father, John Wendell Albrecht.
APPLETON, Minn.—One of western Minnesota's largest ecosystem restoration projects is making "slow but steady progress,'' in the words of Walt Gessler, manager of the Lac qui Parle refuge with the Minnesota Department of Natural Resources. The U.S. Army Corps of Engineers and the DNR are working to restore the ecological integrity of Marsh Lake, west of Appleton. The $12.93 million project aims to clear the turbid and largely rough-fish-dominated waters of the 5,000-acre lake in the Upper Minnesota River Valley.
