Feeding bans in central and north-central Minnesota are precautionary and were put in place surrounding two farms where multiple captive deer were infected with chronic wasting disease. Testing of hunter-harvested deer in these areas in fall 2017 did not detect CWD in the wild, but surveillance efforts will continue until the disease is not detected for three consecutive years. The bans remain in place through February 2019. PineandLakes.com Illustration

Al's rifle was chambered for the 30-30 Winchester caliber, which dates to 1895, about a decade older than the .35 Remington cartridge fired by the first deer rifle I owned. That said, the 30-30 Winchester is still being used today, and it's a safe bet that more whitetail deer have fallen to the 30-30 than to any other caliber. PineandLakes.com Illustration
