Al's rifle was chambered for the 30-30 Winchester caliber, which dates to 1895, about a decade older than the .35 Remington cartridge fired by the first deer rifle I owned. That said, the 30-30 Winchester is still being used today, and it's a safe bet that more whitetail deer have fallen to the 30-30 than to any other caliber. Illustration

Deer hunting equipment and clothing have undergone extreme changes from those early days. Blaze clothing has replaced the old red wool worn by earlier generations. I have a wonderful heavy, red wool coat that once was worn by some hunter. It hangs in our closet only to be worn to town on occasion. Illustratino

"I would expect that we are going to see a similar increase this year," said Christine Reisz, area wildlife supervisor for the Brainerd DNR office. "All of those permit areas are more liberal than they were last year. Every one of those areas is hunter's choice, except for 242 where folks can harvest two deer. I expect our harvest to go up across the board in the Brainerd lakes area." Illustration
