Deer hunting

"We expected the harvest to be greater," said Christine Reisz, area wildlife supervisor for the Brainerd DNR office. "A lot of those permit areas went from lottery to hunter's choice - although 242 went to "management" this year - so we liberalized the season, and folks could take either a doe or an antlered deer. Reports of does with twin fawns - rather than just one - were common this year. All of which was seen by the Minnesota Department of Natural Resources (DNR) as justifying more liberal deer hunting regulations. PineandLakes.com Illustration

Deer hunting equipment and clothing have undergone extreme changes from those early days. Blaze clothing has replaced the old red wool worn by earlier generations. I have a wonderful heavy, red wool coat that once was worn by some hunter. It hangs in our closet only to be worn to town on occasion. PineandLakes.com Illustratino

It's not yet clear whether the early deep snow, 10 inches and more having fallen in some areas of northern Minnesota, will significantly affect deer hunter success. Hunter mobility and deer movements can certainly be affected by snowfall. The forecast for this week leading up to the deer opener is not for what could be called melting temperatures. Time will tell. PineandLakes.com Illustration

"I would expect that we are going to see a similar increase this year," said Christine Reisz, area wildlife supervisor for the Brainerd DNR office. "All of those permit areas are more liberal than they were last year. Every one of those areas is hunter's choice, except for 242 where folks can harvest two deer. I expect our harvest to go up across the board in the Brainerd lakes area." PineandLakes.com Illustration
