We all heard a distant rumble coming from the west. These were the days before radar and satellite weather forecasts, and one could not see any storm approaching. As the sound became louder, the family left the table and all walked outside the house to see if what we were hearing was actually happening. Yes, there indeed was a low, dark cloud bank in the west and it was heading directly over this part of the landscape. Illustration

We showed up at the high school, wedged ourselves into our black and gold wool uniforms and climbed aboard the non-air-conditioned yellow school bus. We were all sweating profusely when we arrived at the forming grounds. Other school bands were unloading and sweat poured from the band members' brows as they pulled out their drums, tubas, saxophones and clarinets. Illustration
