District 12 - Princeton area: Conservation Officer (CO) Mike Krauel (Mora) was part of a site visit on a new piece of a Wildlife Management Area (WMA) and followed up on WMA parking area complaints. While parked at one WMA, Krauel observed two individuals pull up in a car and park near him. Several minutes later, Krauel observed smoke and the strong odor of marijuana coming from the vehicle. The individuals were surprised to see Krauel when he contacted them. Photo Illustration

Researchers with the DNR are monitoring about 30 radio-collared black bears across the state, especially in zones 27, 25 and 45, and in parts of the no-quota zone. Most of them are in or near the Chippewa National Forest between Grand Rapids and Bigfork. Others are farther north, near Orr or Voyageurs National Park. Some collared bears are also around Camp Ripley, and in northwestern Minnesota, especially near Thief Lake Wildlife Management Area and Plummer. MnDNR photo.

MnDNR Conservation Officer Tim Collette (Brainerd) also responded to a call of naked jet skiers circling pontoons full of people. The officer contacted the jet skiers and the boat operating dangerously with them. Multiple charges are pending.

CO Tim Collette (Brainerd #1) - Too many walleyes over 20 inches is a common violation and anglers were caught this week trimming tails with scissors to make them appear under the 20-inch mark.

CO Tim Collette (Brainerd) mediated a continuing dispute between lakeshore property owners and bow fishermen that wake the property owners up in the middle of the night by shining their bright lights into houses and cabins and making noise with generators and loud music. One property owner decided to fight back and started shooting the bow fishermen with paint balls. Both sides received warnings and/or tickets.

Only black bears live in the wild in Minnesota. They usually are shy and flee when encountered. Never approach or try to pet a bear. Injury to people is rare, but bears are potentially dangerous because of their size, strength and speed.
