I wondered how my folks ever made any money when the feed bill was tallied up. Having firsthand knowledge gave me a different perspective of how hard it was to make a dollar on the farm. That was probably the biggest takeaway from this whole exercise. Echo Journal photo illustration.

Only recently did my part of northern Minnesota become a turkey hotspot. Somehow we've been missing the cruel winters of our past. The sandhill cranes weren't here in 1978. I first heard their squawking calls from my deer stand many Novembers ago. It was with some interest that I first discovered their giant tracks in the soft mud near the creek that flows through our hunting land. PineandLakes.com Illustration
