Really, it is much simpler this way. Instead of two or more months of playing hot-or-cold every time we step outside, we can just embrace that fact that winter is here until summer time - none of the hassle of going coatless today because it's almost an acceptable temperature, before bundling up tomorrow to avoid hypothermia. Just wear your parka until it's time for flip-flops. It is as simple as that.

"Officials, especially new guys, can face some adversity out there," said Mid MN Officials Association co-founder Kevin Ruen, who has officiated football and basketball for 20 years. "The fans are getting more bold. That is the disappointing part. In the last few months, I know of at least three instances where fans have been kicked out ... Most people don't care for their antics, and are glad to see them get kicked out."

They all had the same (incorrect) team picked to win the title and they all had the same dejected, sulking tone in their voice when the topic of basketball came up. It then occurred to me that "March Madness" doesn't refer to the supposed mania or hysteria caused by this meant-to-be-enjoyable event. It refers to the anger every bracketeer feels at some point, usually every year, when their team goes home empty-handed. Illustration

We Minnesota sports fans are used to disappointment, from great teams like this past year's Vikings getting blown out when it matters most to poor teams like the 103-loss Twins of 2016 failing to live up to our already bottom-basement expectations.

I took one photography class in college (I got a B-plus in that too, if you were wondering) and took a few photos that ended up being published early in my career, but I would look at the photos taken by fully trained and experienced newspaper photographers and hope my photos would not be on the same page. So far, three of the four major pro teams in Minnesota have greatly exceeded my expectations. The fourth team, the Wild, weren't that bad to begin with, so 2017 was quite fun for the common Minnesota sports fan, and once again - perhaps, foolishly - I'm back to being hopeful for nearly every Minnesota team.
