Tomorrow is special because it is the first day of the year where I don't mind Christmas things being shoved down my throat. My problem is the "Christmas season" starts a little earlier every year. Illustration

"I would expect that we are going to see a similar increase this year," said Christine Reisz, area wildlife supervisor for the Brainerd DNR office. "All of those permit areas are more liberal than they were last year. Every one of those areas is hunter's choice, except for 242 where folks can harvest two deer. I expect our harvest to go up across the board in the Brainerd lakes area." Illustration

I think Halloween is one of the most fun days of the year for a lot of people. Parents enjoy dressing their young children in cute and silly costumes, kids enjoy bringing home a pillowcase full of candy and the rest of us just enjoy the utter weirdness of the whole thing. Illustration

Raining cats and dogs: Come on. Next. Same difference: Not so much an idiom as just a general expression, but I hate this one and need to talk about it. Hearing this phrase gets in my craw more than any other use of proper English.

The Minnesota Timberwolves recently unveiled their new-fangled uniforms. They look fine - nothing special, but I think they are better than what they were wearing before. However, when seeing the photos of the new jerseys, my eyes were immediately drawn to two things: the Nike logo in the top right corner - which will be on every NBA uniform starting this year - and the Fitbit logo on the top left, which is Minnesota's new "corporate sponsor." Why? WHY, why? NBA / Minnesota Timberwolves Ilustration

Sunday morning, I was lying on the couch watching TV while Mork was batting a twist tie across the carpet. I thought nothing of it; she has been playing with twist ties her whole life. All of the sudden, I heard an unnatural crunching sound and the twist tie was nowhere in sight. Illustration

Now that I have a garage, a workbench and a handful of tools, I decided that I am finally ready to give woodworking a try ... and it is harder than I thought it would be. The biggest struggle in my woodworking life at the moment, though, is simply keeping the darn wood from warping. Illustration

The Timberwolves have gone from a young team with no bench waiting to mature and hit their stride to a balanced team of veterans, hopeful stars, a little depth and one top-20 athlete in his prime. I don't know if they have ever had that combination in their nearly 30 years - maybe in the Kevin Garnett/Stephon Marbury era, but I would argue neither were in their prime yet at that point. Studies have shown the benefits of being outdoors time and time again. It has been shown to increase brain function, decrease stress and improve short-term memory. There have even been reports that it can reduce the risk of nearsightedness in children and greatly strengthen your immune system. Illustration
