The rock dam that controls the flow of water between Big Pine Lake and the Pine River is scheduled for replacement.
The water breached the east side of the dam, causing the stream to bypass the traditional outflow area. The erosion can be seen in the background of this photo taken Tuesday at the dam. Steve Kohls/ Brainerd Dispatch Videoplay button

A graph shows the county's revenue collected from its sales tax, compared to projections. The green bar represents the actual revenue collected. The other two bars are two projections used for comparison -- the blue bar represents an inflated top end of sales taxes collected in the cities of Brainerd and Baxter, and the orange bar represents about 75 percent of that top end. When it's ice, it's so shiny that it (material) will not stay on the road. It blows off with traffic, especially when it gets this cold. When you have an ice storm, it can be anywhere from two to five times more expensive depending on how long the cold lasts. No material you put down is working, so we are continually having to put material down in hopes it will stay," said Jory Danielson, Crow Wing County highway maintenance supervisor.
