I'd like to send a great big kudos to all the area people involved in all of our festivals, fairs and activities for jobs well done. There is always something going on, and their hard work is appreciated. We must realize the many hours of time that go into our small-town festivals. Year after year, some of the same people work hard so others can enjoy the offerings. Illustration

Kirk Larson (left) and Tim Hidde guide the last pot of beans into a bed of hot coals Tuesday at Trailside Park in Pequot Lakes. The tradition of Bean Hole Days traces its roots back to 1938, when bankers placed an iron kettle of beans in the ground to thank area farmers. Hundreds of people will line up at noon Wednesday for their free bowl of beans for the 30th consecutive year. Steve Kohls/Brainerd Dispatch Videoplay button
