Inky Fingers: 2008 was a year of change for Pine River

Don't let anyone tell you 2008 wasn't a good year.

Call me doggedly enthusiastic, but I think 2008 held quite a bit of excitement and promise for the future of Pine River - despite the national headlines on war and the economy.

True, there was a lot of change in 2008 for Pine River.

Business changes were apparent in the headlines of the Pine River Journal.

Pine River welcomed brand new businesses to town: ALCO; Heart & Hara Studio; and the Pine River Pantry & Quilters' Parlour.

And, in 2008 a few businesses (Al's Bakery and Dwire's Kennels) closed and reopened with new names and new owners. Now there's Pine River Bakery, with owners Bob and Emily Fulton; and Ma N Paw Kennels, with owners Steve and Trinita Mestuzzi.

Silbaugh's Department Store closed after more than 60 years in business, only to be replaced by Wireless Woods & JJ's Trading Post, operated by the same owners: John and Jackie Wetrosky.

The Cedarwood Motel is under the new ownership of Faye Glein. Jerry and Phyllis Taylor transferred ownership of the Nisswa and Pine River Dairy Queens to two of their daughters, Lisa Kaneski and Kathy Martin. And, the Dairy Queen became a Grill & Chill - expanding their options.

In the area, Sunset Cinema reopened in 2008 under new ownership. Backus got a tattoo shop: Red, White & Blue Tattoo; and Hackensack got its own St. Joseph's Medical Clinic.

Several businesses tried on a new name in 2008 including Rodeway Inn (formerly Trail Side Inn) and Countrywide Tax Services (formerly B&B Bookkeeping.)

Dr. Owen Johnson expanded his practice with two additional dentists to form Pine River Dental Center. Auto Value expanded its selection and premiered a new store on Highway 371.

Down to Earth Wood, a new business in 2007, opened its showroom in 2008.

A few businesses closed due to retirement including Hovey's Studio & Four Directions Gallery; and Ye Old Country Doc veterinary clinic.

And, unfortunately, there were some business closures as well: Houston Dodge-Chrysler-Jeep closed in July of 2008; and Beth's Place and Pfeiffer's Drugs both closed in November 2008.

Yes, it's sad when longtime businesses close, but change is inevitable.

What's encouraging is that new businesses chose Pine River to locate in. As a community, we have a lot to offer.

We have an excellent school district and community education program; wonderful assets for children and families - including the Warehouse, the PR-B Family Center and area churches; and interested and caring community members.

If we're open minded and optimistic as a community - and will work together - I think we can continue to accomplish great things. Here's to 2009!
