Panel recommends associate planner for Breezy Point

The selection committee has chosen an associate planner for the city of Breezy Point.

City Administrator Brad Scott reported at the city council meeting Monday, Dec. 4, that the selection committee interviewed four candidates and recommended offering the position to Arlyn Grussing. The council agreed to authorize an offer. Once an agreement is reached, the council will be asked for final approval on the hire.

The council received notice of an appeal to the planning commission's approval of a conditional use permit for the new Marina restaurant. The council will consider the appeal at a special meeting Dec. 18.

Also on the agenda for the special meeting is the city's truth in taxation hearing and adoption of the 2007 budget and levy.

Vehicle forfeiture sale

Mayor Doug Rach opened and read bids for the sale of vehicles forfeited to the police. Three vehicles were awarded to the highest bidder as follows: 1996 Ford Supercab received seven bids and was awarded to Rob Eckhoff for $2,500; 1994 Chevy Blazer received five bids and was awarded to Rob Eckhoff for $750; 1994 Ford Ranger received 10 bids and was awarded to Tim Walker for $1,321. One person submitted two bids for the Chevy Blazer and, therefore, was excluded. Both of those bids were lower than the winning bid, however.

The sale of a fourth vehicle, a 1991 Chevy 1500 extended cab, was not awarded. The council opened and read the eight bids that were received; however, there was a tie for the highest bid. The tied bidders will be notified and asked to resubmit a bid. The new bids will be opened and awarded at the special meeting Dec. 18.

In other city business, the council:

  • Denied a request to amend the Minimum Lot Size Standards ordinance. At the November planning commission meeting, the commission tabled a decision on the request until its February meeting. The Council denial will keep the decision within the planning commission's purview, allowing the future planning director to have input and giving the planning commission the time it needs to complete review of the request.

  • Appointed Northland Securities as the city's investment advisory firm. Northland Securities was one of two proposals received. It was chosen because the company has more experience with government entities, and it charges no fee for this service to municipalities.

  • Approved the police department purchase of a 2007 Crown Victoria to replace another vehicle that has been in use for five years.

  • Approved liquor license renewals for Commander, Breezy Point Resort, Antlers, PrimeTime, Pelican Square and Deacon's Lodge.

  • Approved an ordinance that amends the Off Highway Vehicle (OHV) Use Ordinance to allow for use of OHVs between sunset and sunrise.

  • Approved a request for a sign to be placed near the intersection of Ranchette Drive and Winter Trail directing cross country skiers and hikers to park and access the trail at the opposite end of the trail. Currently trail users are parking dangerously close to the intersection.
