Patriots' Noska on all-area team

Junior outside hitter Kirsten Noska of the Pequot Lakes Patriots was among 12 players named to the Brainerd Dispatch All-Area Volleyball Team and junior teammate, middle hitter Renee Kardell, received honorable mention.

The All-Area team is selected by the Dispatch staff from players nominated by coaches.

Named Dispatch Volleyball Player of the Year was senior outside hitter Brigetta Berg of the Wadena-Deer Creek Wolverines, who led her team to a 26-8 record and to a berth in the Class AA State Tournament.

Berg led the area with 574 kills and also led in digs with 611 and was second to teammate Kelly DeFoe's 187 blocks with 159.

Others named to the elite team were sophomore setter Katie Wangberg of the Pine River-Backus Tigers and her teammate, and fellow sophomore, Crysta Christensen, an outside hitter.

Both Wangberg and Christiansen were All-Northwoods Conference.

Wangberg had 101 kills, 224 digs, 69 blocks and 46 ace serves and 535 assists.

Christiansen had 191 kills, 208 digs, 27 blocks and 41 ace serves.

Courtney Volkman, Berg's sophomore teammate and teamsetter, was also selected as she led the area with her 908 set assists and also led in ace serves with 89, while adding 141 kills, 248 digs and 86 blocks.

Noska led the Patriots with 167 kills, had 176 digs, 43 blocks, 56 set assists and 20 ace serves.

Both Noska and teammate Kardell were named to the All-Mid-State Conference team as were Berg and Volkman, and Noska was named the Patriots' Most Valuable Player.

Kardell was named the Patriots' Most Dedicated Player and also won the Patriots' Hustle Award for the second year in a row.

Kardell and 22 other players received honorable mention.
