A Crosby man died Sunday, Nov. 9, after suffering an apparent accidental, self-inflicted gunshot wound while hunting in Fifty Lakes.
Christopher J. Stirewalt, 25, apparently accidentally shot himself in the right shoulder, according to the Crow Wing County Sheriff's Office.
A passerby reported seeing an individual dressed in hunting clothes lying on the ground in the woods near Edgewild Resort, the sheriff's department reported.
Stirewalt was pronounced dead at the scene. He was taken to the Anoka County Coroner's office for an autopsy to determine the cause and circumstances of his death.
Assisting deputies were the DNR, Fifty Lakes First Responders, North Ambulance and the coroner's office.
And a Brainerd area man was injured while hunting in the Chippewa National Forest when he shot himself in the foot about 5 p.m. Saturday, Nov. 8, the Cass County Sheriff's office reported.
DNR Conservation Officer Nikki Shoutz said cold wind and low temperatures last weekend hampered the success of some deer hunters. The cold made it harder to stay in the deer stand for some hunters, but most enjoyed some luck.
Jim Guida, conservation officer in the Brainerd and Nisswa areas, said he noticed a rising number of road hunters.
Shots and success rate were down, in Guida's opinion. He received a couple baiting complaints, and arrested a drunk hunter for DWI. That hunter lost his vehicle and firearm.
