Trout Lake Camp, located on Big Trout Lake on the Whitefish Chain, built a scale model of the new Twins field as a Wiffle Ball stadium.

James Rock, Trout Lake Camp's program director, said the camp got the idea to build a replica of the new Twins stadium from other replicas they saw on the Internet.

"We saw some other places that had just built a replica of the back wall of Fenway Park. We are the only ones, as far as we know, to build a complete 360-degree replica for a Wiffle Ball stadium," Rock said.

The Trout Lake Camp Wiffle Ball stadium is built at a 23 percent scale to the real Twins stadium and includes details like a scoreboard, dugouts and a mock jumbo screen.

They broke ground for the stadium in late August of this year and had their official opener the weekend of Oct. 11.

Most of the construction and building work was done with the help of volunteers who came from all over the state to pitch in. Local businesses also helped with the project. Hirshfield Paint and Highway 1 Sod of Brained and Pepsi gave the camp discounts on products.

The Minnesota Twins also helped with the planning of the Wiffle Ball stadium by sending the camp plans and pictures of Target Field.

"The Twins were great. They sent us pictures that weren't even available to the public yet to help us plan," Rock said.

The Wiffle Ball stadium will serve the camp's 3,000 summer youth campers and an additional 3,000 youth on retreats in the fall.

It cost about $4,500 to build the Wiffle Ball stadium and that money came out of the camp's operating budget.

Rock said Trout Lake Camp has been building a new permanent building or attraction every year. In addition to the new Wiffle Ball stadium, the camp also has tubing hills, a zip line, paintball course, floor hockey and broomball, and an indoor rock wall.

Trout Lake Camp was bought by a group of Twin Cities churches in 1945 and has been a camp ever since. The camp is owned and operated by the Minnesota Baptist Conference and holds summer camp, youth retreats and family camp.
