Nuggets roll over Tigers, PR-B falls to Hawley 66-6

On Friday the Class 1A Pine River-Backus football team found out first-hand why Hawley is ranked 2nd in the latest Class 2A football rankings as the Golden Nuggets rushed past the Tigers 66-6 in Northern Plains AA Conference play.

PR-B managed just two first downs and only 60 yards against Hawley's impenetrable defense while the powerful Nugget offense rushed over the Tigers for 378 yards and passed for another 65 yards.

"They were good, plain and simple," said Tiger head coach Randy Schwegel.

PR-B went three-and-out on each for its first two possessions while Hawley scored on a 30-yard romp and a 39-yard pass completion for a 14-0 Nugget. The Tigers got a first down on back-to-back rushes by Derek Sonenstahl of three and eight yards but the drive stalled and PR-B punted it away. The first quarter ended with Hawley on top 14-0.

Five seconds into the second quarter the Nuggets pounded it in from three yards out to make it 20-0. On the Tigers' first possession of the second quarter, Hawley picked off a Nathan Holm pass and returned it 26 yards for a touchdown, extending the lead to 28-0.

On the next possession the Nuggets intercepted another Holm pass and on first down tossed a 26-yard touchdown strike for a 35-0 lead with 10:11 to play in the first half. PR-B went three-and-out on its next possession but the Tigers' Aaron Kottschade got into the Hawley backfield stuffing the Nuggets' quarterback Taylor Harms for a six-yard loss and forcing Hawley to punt for the first time in the game. On a keeper later in the quarter Harms would take the ball right and cut back left before scampering 46 yards to a touchdown. The Nuggets scored on a broken play, two-point conversion for a 43-0 lead at the break.

Hawley began its first possession of the second half on its 43-yard line. The Nuggets put together a sustained drive with rushes of six, 13, 7 and 10 before Harms took it in from eight yards out for a 50-0 lead with 8:31 to play in the third quarter.

On their first drive the of the second half the Tigers came to life as Holm connected with Mitchell Kline on a 19-yard pass completion for their second first-down of the game. The drive would stall and PR-B punted to the Hawley 12-yard line. On first down the Tigers stripped the ball, recovering on the 15-yard line. Sonenstahl carried for six yards and two carries by Levi Allen game the Tigers a first-and-goal on the four-yard line before Allen pounded it in to get PR-B on the board at 50-6 with 4:01 to play in the quarter.

The Nuggets' reserves put together a short drive that started on the Tiger 38-yard line that was capped off with a five-yard touchdown, extending the lead to 58-6 with 8:00 to play in the game. Hawley added another score on a 29-yard scamper up the middle with 38 seconds to play for the 66-6 final.

Sonenstahl led PR-B with 27 yards on 11 carries. Allen had 12 yards and a touchdown on 10 carries. Holm completed just one of his 10 passes and threw two interceptions.

"We put together a couple of good defensive plays," Schwegel said, "and then we'd give up a big play. We played hard early but once the score got a little out of hand, I think we just started going through the motions."

"We made a lot of mistakes," Schwegel continued. "We didn't line up right or run the right pass routes. We had some penalties that we haven't had all season. We don't have enough speed as a team to make up for getting out of position on defense."

"Since we don't have that speed, I expect that Blackduck will try to throw on us a lot this week," Schwegel added.

With the loss, PR-B falls to 2-1 in the Northern Plains AA Conference and 2-2 overall. On Friday the Tigers host the 0-4 Blackduck Drakes for homecoming. The Drakes come off a 34-14 loss to Walker-Hackensack-Akeley.
